In the aftermath of a devastating tanker explosion at Dikko Junction along the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway in Niger State, which claimed the lives of over 60 people and left many others injured, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has issued a stern warning against traffic negligence. The explosion occurred on Saturday when a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control and caught fire, leading to widespread destruction of shops and properties.
Describing the incident as tragic, the IGP expressed his condolences to the people and government of Niger State. In response to the explosion, IGP Egbetokun directed all State Commissioners of Police to enhance the capacity of their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) and collaborate closely with other traffic management agencies. He emphasized the need for the strict enforcement of traffic laws to avoid such incidents in the future.
The IGP highlighted that negligence and disregard for traffic regulations are major contributors to such tragic events, stressing that vehicle owners and drivers must prioritize safety by ensuring their vehicles are roadworthy and adhering to all traffic laws.
He further urged transport operators and the general public to act responsibly and work together to prevent unnecessary loss of life and property. Egbetokun concluded by praying for the souls of the departed and wishing a swift recovery to the injured.
