Babatunji Wusu –
Nigeria needs to hire an additional 190,000 police officers, according to acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, in order to fully secure the nation.
NAN reports that Egbetokun spoke on Wednesday at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies’ (NIPSS) Jos, Plateau state, defense week for the senior executive course (SEC) 45.
According to him, this number is necessary in order to comply with the UN-recommended police to population ratio.
Based on a ratio of one police officer to around 600 inhabitants, Nigeria’s present police force of slightly over 370,000 policemen is insufficient.
The UN recommends a police officer for every about 450 citizens.Egbetokun stated that the F.G. must expand the annual quota for police personnel recruitment from 10,000 to 20,000 in order to fulfill the benchmark.
