Member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency, Mascot Ikwechegh, has formally resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), deepening the party’s crisis in Abia State.
Ikwechegh tendered his resignation in a letter addressed to the APGA Ward Chairman in Eziama Ward 1, Aba North Local Government Area, on Saturday. In the letter, the federal lawmaker expressed gratitude to the party for the platform it provided him to serve, while wishing it success in its future political engagements. He, however, stopped short of revealing his next political destination.
The lawmaker’s exit comes just days after all Local Government executives and ward officials of APGA in Aba North and Aba South resigned en masse, signalling widening cracks within the party’s structure in the commercial city.
With Ikwechegh’s departure, APGA has now lost its remaining federal lawmaker from Abia State. The development follows the earlier resignation of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe in December 2025, a move that significantly weakened the party’s foothold in the state.
Reacting to the development, Abia State Chairman of APGA, Sunday Onukwubiri, said his office had yet to receive any formal communication regarding Ikwechegh’s resignation. He maintained that the party remains resilient despite the wave of defections.
“It is bad that people throw away the ladder they used in climbing up to prominence, but I can assure you that APGA will remain stronger and more united in Abia,” Onukwubiri stated.
Ikwechegh’s resignation marks a significant political shift in Abia’s evolving power dynamics, leaving observers watching closely for his next move and its potential impact on the state’s political landscape.
