Lazio defeated bottom-seeded Celtic 2-0 at home on Tuesday in Champions League Group E thanks to two goals in the last minute from captain Ciro Immobile. The victory ended the visitors’ hopes of qualifying and put the Italians in a great position to advance to the round of 16.
Immobile, a second-half substitution, gave the home team the lead in the 82nd minute with a close-range goal into the roof of the net. Three minutes later, he doubled the lead with a low shot after cutting inside onto his left foot.
Later on Tuesday, third-place Feyenoord suffered a home loss to first-place Atletico Madrid, securing Lazio’s spot in the round of 16.
Celtic has one point and is not able to finish in the top two as the referee changed his judgment after a VAR review, despite the team being granted a penalty in stoppage time.
Lazio had a better opportunity in the first forty-five minutes through Felipe Anderson, but the Brazilian missed the crossbar with his close-range header. Lazio had more chances in the first half.
After losing to Lazio 6-0 in its previous match in Madrid, Celtic needed to win to maintain its hopes of finishing in the top two. They increased their attempts in the second half but were unable to get past Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel.
After the hour, Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri introduced Pedro and Immobile as the team’s forwards for the second half.
The captain, who on Saturday against Salernitana became the first player to score 100 goals in Serie A away from home, demonstrated his skill with two superb finishes to lead the Italians to their third victory in five group games.
The referee originally gave Celtic a penalty for a push on Oh Hyeon-gyu, but he later changed his mind after the VAR requested him to check his call on the pitchside monitor, capping Celtic’s wretched evening in stoppage time.
