Prof. Christopher Imumolen, the Presidential Candidate of the Accord Party (AP), has stated that those who rely on influencing the electorate with money will be embarrassed in the February 25 2023 presidential election because previous winners won on merit, not monetary influence.
According to him, former presidents ranging from Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to the current president, President Muhammadu Buhari, were not moneybags, yet they won the presidential election, and their credibility played a significant role in their success.
Imumolen made the remarks in Lagos at the “Inauguration of the Lagos Chapter of the Accord Party Campaign Council/Flag Handover and Presentation of Certificate of Return to Party Candidates for the 2023 General Elections,” where he also received a number of decampees from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking about his chances in the general elections at the event in Oshodi, Lagos State, he said he emerged as the Accord Party’s flagbearer due to his pedigree and credibility.
Professor Imumolem stated that his party’s governorship candidate, Hakeem Dickson, is aiming for five million votes in Lagos.
“In Nigeria, God plays His role, it is not the highest spenders that have been voted as presidents of the country from available records. Chief Olusegun Obasanjo became president after being released from prison, and he had no money in his account at the time.
Then came President Yar’Adua, who did not have any money and was not a money bag, and President Goodluck Jonathan. If it had been due to financial constraints, our current president, Muhammadu Buhari, would not have been elected,” he said.
Further, the AP presidential candidate bemoaned the country’s poor state, claiming that citizens were suffering as poverty levels rose.
Imumolen stated that many people see Accord as the only capable party capable of moving Nigeria forward, which is why the party is receiving decampees from both the APC and the leading opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
