On Sunday afternoon, a road accident involving over five cars claimed multiple lives and injured no fewer than eight people at the popular Nicon Junction along the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway in Abuja.

According to an eyewitness, Mr. Clifford Ugochukwu, a resident of the Gishiri community, which is directly opposite the Nicon Junction where the accident occurred, he was returning from Church at around 1:20pm when he noticed the large crowd at the junction.

According to what he saw after the accident, the people who were injured were rushed to the hospital by Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) personnel who were on the scene.

When Ugochukwu inquired about the cause of the accident, some said it was caused by overspeeding, but the accident caught everyone off guard, and some people waiting to board vehicles were not spared.

“I counted about five vehicles, one was inside the drainage and was badly damaged, and there was another Camry 2013 that crossed over to the other side of the road, but was stopped by an electric pole from somersaulting.

“It also involved a Camry 2007, and 2008 model on the road, as well as two other vehicles. But the one that was inside the drainage, where the majority of the people were killed, was a taxi.

“I was able to see about four people severely injured on the ground, but cannot say if they were dead or not. But I confirmed two dead bodies and inquired about the number of casualties; some said five, others said four, and several people were injured.

“Because the vehicles collided with several people who were waiting along the road to cross to the other side of the road without using the pedestrian bridge. “However, I’m not sure how many people died in the accident,” he said.

However, at the time of filing this report, FRSC officials were transporting injured victims to hospitals and dead victims to morgues, while a large crowd of onlookers remained at the scene of the accident.
