A couple is being held by the Police Command in Anambra on suspicion of smuggling a one-month-old infant from Lagos to Onitsha.

This is stated in a statement provided to newsmen on Tuesday in Onitsha, which was signed by DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the State Police Public Relations Officer.

According to Ikenga, the intercept was made on Sunday at Bridgehead in Onitsha.

He claimed that when the infant was crying for food during the trip, a fellow passenger noticed that the mother was unable to nurse the child in the couple’s opulent bus, which belonged to a well-known transportation firm.

The good samaritan called the Anambra Police control room hotline in Awka, and the police at Anambra on the Bridgehead in Onitsha received the information.

“In the evening hours, the cops stopped and waited for the affluent bus mentioned. He claimed, “The couple and the infant were recognized and taken down for interrogation.

He mentioned that she acknowledged paying N30,000 to purchase the infant from its mother in Ajah, Lagos.

He added that Aderemi Adeoye, the Commissioner of Police, had expressed gratitude to the civic-minded individual for his compassionate assistance in providing the information that resulted in the child’s rescue.

He emphasized that Adeoye was proud of the police officers’ alertness and commitment to duty.

The couple, he said, were to be turned up to the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking of Persons (NAPTIP) for additional inquiry and prosecution, per the commissioner’s directive.

According to Ikenga, the infant has been placed under the care of the state Ministry of Women Affairs while an inquiry is conducted.
