To lessen the suffering of the travelers caused by the flood, Dr. George Moghalu, the managing director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), has instructed the area manager of the Lokoja Area Office to swiftly release NIWA boats to provide services for stranded travelers in Lokoja and Koton Karfe of Kogi State.

The 2012 flood level was confirmed by NIWA gauge readers in Lokoja to be 12.84 meters, whereas the reading for this year is 13.22 meters. As a result, the 2022 flood level has topped that of 2012 by 0.38 meters.

This year’s flood in Kogi State’s Ajaokuta, Lokoja, and Koton Karfe Local Government Areas rendered some key highways inaccessible, severely limiting travel options from or through Lokoja to Abuja.

In accordance with the safety recommendations of wearing life jackets, avoiding overloading, overspeeding, and night sailing, NIWA and the Boat Owners Association have been helping these victims in this respect.
