According to the Lagos State Command of the Nigerian Police, 111 defilement instances were reported between April and June 2023.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, verified this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday.
According to Hundeyin, the leadership was concerned about the rise in the state’s defilement cases.
He claimed that 56 incidences of domestic violence and 14 cases of rape occurred within the same time period.
According to the police image-maker, 99 suspects were brought to court at that time.
He added that 83 instances were now being investigated, demonstrating the command’s dedication to bringing charges against anyone in Lagos State who engages in domestic or gender-based violence.
Hundeyin claimed that CP Idowu Owohunwa’s redesign of the command’s Gender Unit was a sign of his determination to take serious action against those responsible for gender-based violence.
He claimed that in order to enhance the unit’s investigations into cases of gender-based violence, more officers had been trained and added.
The police spokeswoman urged the people to always come forward when they were being mistreated or saw gender or sexual abuse going on around them and promised that the command will act to defend their rights. (NAN)
