The four-person Nigerian sambo delegation had a successful excursion as they were all awarded medals at the ongoing All African Games in Ghana.
Tuesday marked the conclusion of the 13th edition of the All African Games’ Sambo competition, and Team Nigeria celebrated in style.
In the Sambo event, one of the tournament’s seven demonstration sports, Team Nigeria faced off against Algeria, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Guinea, Mali, Morocco, Niger Republic, Togo, and the hosts, Ghana.
James Chegwam of Nigeria started things off for his country by taking home the bronze in the men’s 58kg division.
In the men’s 79kg division, Jonah Kajido, another Nigerian, lost to Morocco and took home a silver medal.
Charity Jatau’s incredible performance in the women’s 59kg category secured Nigeria’s only gold medal in the Sambo event.
All of the Nigerian competitors in the Sambo event took home medals, including Fatima Ogbonyomi, who was content with her silver in the women’s 65kg class.
After the event, the vice president of the Sambo Association of Nigeria, Sheriff Hammed, said, “We came with four athletes, and we are returning with three medals, and this goes to show that there is more potential in the sport if we continue to promote and grow the sport.
“These medals would motivate us to work harder to grow the sport and we believe this set of athletes will inspire others to embrace the sport. We are excited and we hope Sambo will officially be recognized by the organizers of the African Games in subsequent editions while the International Olympic Committee will consider the sport for future Games.”
