Thousands of New Nigeria Peoples Party members in Yobe State have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party.

Babayo Liman, the NNPP North-East Zonal Secretary, announced the defection to reporters on Tuesday in Damaturu, the state capital.

“We are here to inform the general public and our throngs of 600,000 supporters in the six northeastern states of our decision,” he said.

Liman said he was defecting with “about 170,000 supporters” in Yobe.

“The party lacks structure and focus to address Nigerians’ problems,” he said.

He also stated that the NNPP leadership had been unable to resolve some internal crises for more than five months.

“So I decided to resign my appointment and join PDP in support of the presidential candidate of the party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

“It is customary for a leader to inform his supporters of his decision to defect from one political party to the other.

“So I took it upon myself to go around the six northeastern states informing supporters of my decision and position,” he explained.

According to Liman, Nigeria’s 16-year PDP administration has been a great success for all Nigerians.

He claimed that insecurity existed only in certain parts of Nigeria, as opposed to the All Progressives Congress administration, during which it had spread throughout the country.
