Tunji Wusu –
Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), the president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has expressed concern about the wellbeing of the nation’s judges.
The NBA president made this statement when he visited the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kayode Ariwoola, and the family of late Justice of the Supreme Court, Chima Centus Nweze, in Abuja on Tuesday to express his condolences for the Justice’s passing on Sunday, July 30, 2023, according to a statement by the NBA’s national publicity secretary, Mr. Akorede Habeeb Lawal.
According to Maikyau, “We have lost Judges and Justices to the icy hands of death during the past several weeks. This brings up concerns about judicial officials’ welfare once more and calls for an urgent examination of their working circumstances.
He declared it to be wholly unacceptable when judges and justices pass away in situations that appear to have been careless with their health and wellbeing.
Maikyau, who characterized Justice Nweze as a thoughtful jurist, conveyed the sorrow of the Bar at the late justice’s passing.
He advised the family to take solace in the fact that his lordship had lived a meaningful life and reassured them of the NBA’s preparedness to fully participate in a fitting funeral for the late Supreme Court Justice.
The NBA’s Human Rights Institute (HRI) Co-Chairman and Chairman, Chino Obiagwu, SAN, and Wale Fapohunda (SAN), were present in the NBA President’s entourage.
