Former President of the Nigerian Senate, David Mark, has underscored the necessity for Nigeria to learn from its past mistakes to foster national progress. In his goodwill message on the occasion of Nigeria’s 64th Independence Anniversary on October 1, he urged the nation to engage in reflective consideration of its history.

In a message shared by his former media adviser, Paul Mumeh, Mark assessed Nigeria’s trajectory, acknowledging the challenges posed by insecurity, poverty, illness, and overall underdevelopment. He stated, however, that Nigeria is endowed with abundant human and natural resources capable of significantly enhancing the country’s prospects.

Mark articulated that such progress is attainable if citizens exhibit patriotism and unite under a common mission. He remarked, “Despite the disappointments we face, the lessons from our past should guide our path forward. We must learn from our past mistakes and strive for a brighter future.”

Reflecting on Nigeria’s tumultuous history, including the 30-month civil war and recurrent ethno-religious conflicts, Mark attributed these issues to leadership inadequacies and failures in citizenship. He cautioned against the recent rise of divisive rhetoric and inflammatory statements, which threaten to further fragment the nation’s already delicate social fabric.
