The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognised Major Agbo as the National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), replacing factional chairman Bala Yusuf. The decision, announced in Abuja on Wednesday, marks a major development in the party’s long-running leadership dispute. The NNPP leadership change became clear after INEC updated its official portal with Agbo’s name and the list of members of the party’s National Working Committee. The NNPP leadership is now reflected in the commission’s official records.
The updated records include Olaposi Oginni as National Secretary, Prince Adetoyese Omokanye as National Treasurer, Anthony Apugo as National Financial Secretary and Asuquo Ibok as National Legal Adviser. The recognition follows months of internal disagreements that have affected the opposition party since the 2023 general election.
Reacting to the development, Agbo described the update as proof of the legitimacy of the NNPP leadership. He said, “I am pleased to formally announce that the complete upload of the duly recognised National Working Committee under my leadership has been concluded by INEC.
“This development reinforces the legitimacy of the leadership of our great party and strengthens our preparations for future political activities. Indeed, the era of betrayal of trust is over as Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima have since gone their ways. We wish them all the best in their future political endeavours.
“We were sure that the judiciary would do justice to the issues and we are indeed not disappointed. They proved to be truly the last hope of the common man, rose to the occasion, defended our democracy and rule of law in the face of avoidable threats.”
Agbo also announced that the party had begun preparations for the 2027 general elections, saying it had started uploading candidates after receiving the required access code from INEC. “Following this achievement, the party has commenced the process of uploading candidates for the 2027 general elections in accordance with the timetable and guidelines of the Independent National Electoral Commission after receiving the access code recently.
“We are determined to present competent, credible and people-oriented candidates who will champion good governance and national development in line with our manifesto. The NNPP remains open to every patriotic Nigerian who desires positive change,” he stated.
He further appealed for stronger cooperation to tackle insecurity and urged INEC to conduct free, fair and transparent elections in 2027. According to him, “We must join hands with the Federal Government to tackle the challenge of insecurity in Nigeria. However, we call on the FG and all security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve inter-agency collaboration and deploy every lawful means necessary to restore peace and protect the lives of Nigerians.
“The NNPP also urges the INEC to remain steadfast, impartial and committed to conducting free, fair, credible and transparent elections come 2027.
“The confidence of Nigerians in the democratic process depends largely on the integrity, independence and professionalism of the electoral umpire.”
Responding to the development, Bala Yusuf confirmed he was aware of the decision but declined to comment further. He said, “Yes, I am aware. However, I don’t have enough time to discuss the details.
“Right now, I am in transit. When I come to Abuja. I will release a statement.”
How could this leadership recognition shape the NNPP leadership ahead of the 2027 elections?
