The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has asserted its readiness to conduct the 2027 general election, even as the National Assembly delays action on the amended Electoral Act.
INEC disclosed that it has completed the election timetable and schedule of activities and is now awaiting legislative action on the proposed amendments. The revelation came from INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a meeting with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Abuja on Wednesday.
Amupitan explained that while the Commission has submitted its recommendations to lawmakers, the timing of the Electoral Act’s passage could necessitate adjustments to some planned activities.
“Certain elements of the timetable may shift depending on when the National Assembly finalizes the amended law,” he said, adding that the Commission remains committed to delivering a credible and transparent election.
He emphasized that until the Electoral Act is formally amended and signed into law, INEC will continue to execute its responsibilities under the current legal framework.
