The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) received the final shipment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) system yesterday, in preparation for the 2023 general election.
Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC, and the commission’s national commissioners, as well as top officials, received the BVAS at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
In a statement, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, noted that “in furtherance of the preparations for the 2023 General Election, the commission, yesterday, January 3, 2023, received the last consignment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation (BVAS) machines with 52 days to the election”.
“The commission’s Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, National Commissioners, and senior commission officials were at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja to greet the BVAS,” according to the announcement. Officials from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO), and airport security were present to greet the INEC team”.
“To facilitate the smooth delivery of the devices, the commission established four airport hubs in Abuja, Kano, Lagos, and Port Harcourt,” it continued. Several aircraft over the last four months brought the BVAS to specified airports for relocation to federation states ahead of the elections.
