The Benue State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 42 armed herders and local bandits in connection with attacks and other criminal activities across several communities in the state.

Commissioner of Police, Ifeanyi Emenari, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Makurdi. He said the arrests were made over the last one month as part of intensified efforts to restore security to troubled areas.

According to Emenari, many of the suspects have already been charged to court, while others remain in custody under investigation.

“In the last one month, we have arrested 42 armed herders and local bandits from communities across the state. Most of them have been charged to court,” the CP said.

“We also have about 10 herders who have been remanded by the courts in the course of their trial. Investigations are still ongoing for others who will be charged soon.”

He added that the police command had deployed tactical teams to key local government areas affected by violence, including Apa, Gwer West, Logo, Katsina-Ala, Ukum, Agatu, and Guma.

“Our tactical teams are already in the bushes of these communities, combing the areas and taking the fight directly to those responsible for the attacks and killings,” Emenari stated.

He assured residents that the command was committed to securing rural communities to enable displaced persons to return to their homes and resume farming and economic activities.

The police commissioner reaffirmed that the state command, in collaboration with sister security agencies, would continue to carry out intelligence-driven operations to rid the state of criminal elements.
