In the course of repelling terrorists in the Abadam local government area of Borno State, three soldiers were murdered and ten others suffered injuries of varying severity when their convoy was ambushed by the Islamic State of the West African Province (ISWAP).
According to information obtained, a Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device (VBIED) attacked the troops on Sunday as they advanced towards the ISWAP camp in Tunbum Reza as part of a clearance operation against the terror group. The troops were members of Sector 3 and Sector 4 of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF).
The joint troops successfully responded with superior firepower and thwarted the ambush, according to intelligence information made available to LEADERSHIP and obtained by Zagazola Makama, a counterinsurgency expert and security analyst in the Lake Chad region.
According to the sources, one of the VBIED struck a Hilux truck and the other an MRAP belonging to Sector 4 MNJTF forces from the Niger Republic.
The sources claimed that there were many terrorist casualties, albeit it is yet unclear exactly how many.
The military stopped a similar attempt in Arege less than 24 hours prior, killing 10 ISWAP terrorists and destroying three of their vehicles in the process.
The reports claimed that the ISWAP terrorist made an ambitious attempt to use a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) to get into the harbor of the advancing soldiers but was quickly apprehended.
The injured personnel were taken away for medical attention.
The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) is now engaged in an operation known as Operation HARBIN ZUMA, which aims to eliminate terrorist hideouts and bring about complete normalcy in the Lake Chad region.
ISWAP, on the other hand, had resorted to desperate yet extreme tactics to defend themselves from the military’s repeated attacks that had invaded their enclaves.
