Jannik Sinner Battles Back to Reach Wimbledon Second Round

World number one Jannik Sinner overcame a difficult start to successfully begin his Wimbledon title defence, defeating Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-3 on Monday to secure a place in the second round.

The victory came in Sinner’s first competitive grass-court match of the season after his early exit from the French Open last month. It also marked his 94th Grand Slam victory, drawing him level with fellow Italian Nicola Pietrangeli for the highest number of Grand Slam match wins by an Italian player.

The Wimbledon title defence did not begin smoothly, as Sinner dropped the opening set and briefly raised concerns among supporters who remembered his surprise second-round defeat at Roland Garros. However, the 24-year-old responded strongly in the second set, sealing it with a powerful ace to level the contest.

The match remained fiercely competitive as Sinner suffered a fall during the third set and appeared uncomfortable afterwards. He was later seen with what looked like bloodstains on one of his shoes following another incident. Despite continuing the match, he lost a tense tie-break after appearing well placed to take the set.

The four-time Grand Slam champion refused to let the setback affect him. He dominated the fourth set with confident tennis before taking complete control of the deciding set. His composed finish ensured his Wimbledon title defence stayed on course and earned him a second-round clash with Portugal’s Nuno Borges.

Sinner will now look to build on the hard-fought victory as he continues his pursuit of another Wimbledon crown after overcoming a determined challenge from Kecmanovic.
