Defending champion Jelena Ostapenko overcame a slow start to defeat Poland’s Magdalena Frech 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at the Adelaide International on Tuesday. The 17th-ranked Latvian, who won Roland Garros in 2017, struggled with unforced errors in the opening set but found her rhythm in the second and third sets to secure the win. Ostapenko will next face American Madison Keys, who dominated Brazil’s Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-2, 6-1 in her own match.

In other matches, Greek Maria Sakkari, returning from a shoulder injury that sidelined her in late 2024, defeated Czech Linda Noskova 6-3, 6-3. Sakkari, who is still building up her match fitness, will next face top seed Jessica Pegula. In the men’s draw, American Brandon Nakashima defeated Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann, and Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic upset sixth seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan.
