Following the collapse of a tanker carrying gasoline in Moro LGA, Kwara State, at least five individuals are said to have perished from burns and numerous others are injured.
It was learned that the incident happened during the weekend, around an hour after the truck dropped and before individuals raced to collect gasoline.
“Fuel found its way into the gutter after the tanker fell, and people rushed to collect some of it and in the process, fire was ignited,” a witness said.
One of the two kids who went to get water was burned alive in the process. In the hospital, the second is fighting for his life.
Three persons who were still scooping the product when the fire broke out through the gutter way were reduced to ashes, and a man who had gone to relieve himself in a nearby bush without realizing the development was burned in the process. Seven individuals were hurt and taken to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, while five people have passed away.
Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, a spokesman for the Kwara Fire Service, verified the occurrence and stated that their personnel put out the fire. However, he added, “I cannot put a figure of the casualties now.”
