An attempt by the police to hold musician Seun Kuti for 21 days for allegedly assaulting a police officer was unsuccessful in a Chief Magistrate Court in Yaba, Lagos.
According to SaharaReporters, the police had requested to keep Seun Kuti for 21 days on Tuesday, May 16, stating the policeman he is accused of assaulting is in a coma at an unidentified hospital.
But on Tuesday afternoon, the judge released the Afrobeat musician on bail and gave the Nigerian police 48 hours to wrap up their inquiry into the alleged assault before releasing Kuti.
The story quotes a witness as saying: “The court gives police 48 hours to finish “their investigations,” following which Kuti can be released on bond and sent home.
Two sureties who must own landed property in Lagos are required to post bail for Kuti.
The police were also asked not to pursue charges against the defendant by the Chief Magistrate.
