Dauda Lawal, a candidate for governor from the People Democratic Party of Zamfara, had his petition for the position dismissed by the Court of Appeal sitting in Sokoto State, presided over by Justice Muhammad Shuaibu, which rendered his campaign for governor invalid.
Justice Shuaibu stated the appeal abused the legal system and lacked merit in his ruling, which the three judges on the panel agreed with.
Lawal had no right to contest the judgment he had previously complied with, according to Shuaibu’s additional explanation.
Ibrahim Shehu, a PDP candidate for governor of the state, had contested Lawal’s selection as the PDP nominee.
Shehu contended that anomalies and violations of the Electoral Act and PDP rules marred the election that returned Lawal.
He went the Federal High Court in Gusau out of dissatisfaction, and it annulled the primary and ordered PDP to hold a rerun within 14 days.
PDP carried out the rerun in accordance with the ruling, and Lawal made a comeback.
Shehu reapplied to the same high court, emphasizing that no election had been declared in his favor and that the PDP would not be fielding a candidate for governor in the 2023 election.
Aminu Aliyu, the appealants’ attorney, responded by saying that his client has the right to appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court.
Ndiana Anaka, the respondent’s attorney, also spoke out and hailed the decision as a triumph for democracy and the rule of law.
