Tunji Wusu –
The Department of State Services (DSS) has been ordered to give incarcerated Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu access to doctors of his choice and medical records by the Federal High Court of Nigeria in Abuja.
On Thursday, Justice Binta Nyako handed down the ruling in a case that Kanu’s legal team, led by Mike Ozekhome (SAN), had brought.
Despite being in detention, Justice Nyako ruled that Kanu had a fundamental right to examine his medical data and the doctors of his choice.
However, the judge mandated that any independent medical evaluation or examination of Kanu to be conducted by his own medical specialists be under the supervision of the DSS, with the entire procedure being recorded and sealed for security reasons.
In the lawsuit with the file number FHC/ABJ/CS/ 2341/2022, Kanu sought that his doctors be given the right to examine him independently in order to determine his true state of health.
