Babatunji Wusu –

A second seven-member panel has been appointed by Justice Daniel Okungbowa, the Chief Judge of Edo State, to look into claims made against the state’s deputy governor, Philip Shaibu.

The 24-member Assembly’s notice of impeachment on March 6, 2024, included the allegations.
In a statement released on Monday with reference number CR/4837/Vol. I1/131, Chief Registrar of the Edo High Court, Mr. B. O. Osawaru, revealed that Justice S.A. Omonua (rtd.) will continue to serve as the panel’s head.

Osawaru added that the panel’s composition complied with Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, Section 188(5) (as modified).

Prof. Theresa Akpoghome, Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu, Dr. Andrew Oliha, Idris Abdulkareen, President Aighokhian, and Mariam Erakhoba Ilavbare round out the new panel’s membership.

The Chief Registrar named Profs. Violet Aigbokhaebo, Boniface Onomion Edegbai, and Theresa Akpoghome as well as Dr. Andrew Oliha and Messrs. Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu and Idris Abdulkareen as the other panel members in a statement made on March 22, 2024.

On March 19, the Chief Judge was instructed by a motion passed by 19 out of the 24 members of the Edo legislature to form the seven-member panel.
Shaibu has attempted on several occasions to halt the impeachment process through legal action, but the matter has not produced the desired outcome.
