Abdulkarim Lawan has been chosen as the tenth Assembly’s Speaker by the Borno state House of Assembly.
Hon. Lawan presided over the House as speaker since the sixth assembly and was the previous speaker of the ninth assembly.
The House will have its maiden session on June 13 according to a proclamation by state Governor Babagana Zulum, according to assembly clerk Mr. Jidayi Mamza.
According to powers granted to him by section 105 subsection 3 of the 1999 Constitution as amended, “His Excellency Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has received message of proclamation from the House requesting that it hold its first session on Tuesday, June 13, 2023,” the Clerk of the House said.
Member-elect for Marte and Gambomi Abba Kyari Kolo, a member-elect for Jere, seconded Marte’s motion to nominate Abdulkarim Lawan.
The House also unanimously chose Abdullahi Musa, a member of the Askira/Uba state constituency and the previous Deputy Speaker, to serve as the next Deputy Speaker.
Both members stated their willingness to serve and accepted the nomination.
The House is united, the Speaker said in his acceptance speech shortly after taking the oath of office and allegiance. The Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan has served as Speaker for twelve years.
He asked the newly elected members to exercise restraint and collaborate closely with the executive branch to restructure the state in a number of sectors, including security, food security, and education.
To elevate the Assembly, the Speaker vowed to maintain an open door policy.
The House Leader is Dige Mohammed from the Kala Balge state constituency. The Chief Whip is Baba Ali Modu from Mafa. The Deputy Leaders are Malami Wakil Korede from Damboa and Audu Mustapha from Magumeri. The Speaker also revealed the names of the major offices of the tenth Assembly.
