Supreme Court Justice Chima Centus Nweze and Federal High Court Justice Peter Hoommuk Mallong have died.
On July 30, the Nation learned that both judicial officers had perished.

When called just now, the Supreme Court’s spokesman, Dr. Festus Akande, verified the news.

Hassan Sulaiman, the Chief Registrar of the Federal High Court, confirmed Justice Mallong’s death in a brief statement.

“It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the death of our own, hon. Justice Peter Hoommuk Mallong, a judge of the Federal High Court, who passed away unexpectedly on 30th July 2023 in Abuja after a brief illness,” Sulaiman said in a statement.

“Words cannot explain how much we shall miss him. Funeral arrangements will be made public in due course.”

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has expressed astonishment at the death of Justice Nweze.

According to NBA’s National Publicity Secretary, Akorede Lawal, the association’s President, Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), was shocked to learn of Justice Nweze’s death.

“The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, has received with shock and dismay the news of the death of Hon. Justice Chima Centus Nweze, Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which tragic event occurred on Sunday, 30 July, 2023.”

“Hon. Justice Nweze was a wise and learned jurist.” Many of His Lordship’s judgements have formed, influenced, and developed our law and jurisprudence. He was a judicial officer who was disciplined, industrious, and brave.

“The NBA President expresses condolences to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Kayode Ariwoola, GCON, the entire Nigerian Judiciary, the government and people of Enugu State, friends and family of Hon. Justice Nweze, and prays that the Almighty God comforts his lordship’s family and friends on his lordship’s demise.”
