The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a significant improvement in power supply to more states in Northern Nigeria, following the successful energisation of the 330kV Ugwuaji-Makurdi-Jos Transmission Line 2. This update was shared in a statement on Thursday, signed by Ndidi Mbah, the General Manager of Public Affairs.
With the restoration of this transmission line, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola Distribution Companies can now receive additional electricity loads for onward distribution to customers. The repair of the Ugwuaji-Makurdi-Jos Line 2 follows a series of setbacks caused by vandalism, including the damage to the 330kV Ugwuaji-Apir transmission lines, which had been out of service since October 21, 2024. Line 1 of the Ugwuaji-Apir route was repaired and restored on October 30, 2024.
A month earlier, vandals severely damaged two towers along the 330kV Shiroro-Kaduna transmission lines, as well as the Ugwuaji-Apir line, leading to a widespread blackout that affected 17 states, with Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Gombe, and Katsina being the hardest hit.
Providing an update on the restoration, TCN confirmed that engineers had completed repairs and re-stringing of the damaged sections of the transmission line earlier today, enabling the energisation of the line by 11:50 am on November 14, 2024. As a result, the Apir and Jos Transmission Substations are now receiving power, and both the Ugwuaji-Makurdi-Jos Line 2 and Ugwuaji-Apir Line 1 are now fully operational.
This dual restoration will significantly improve power supply to the North East and North West regions. TCN also expressed its appreciation for the patience and understanding shown by electricity customers in the northern region who were affected by the previous outages.
