On April 5, 2023, a tragic incident unfolded at a checkpoint in Asaba, where a police inspector was accused of fatally shooting Mr. Ibeh Onyeka, a phone dealer.

Reportedly, the officer took Mr. Onyeka’s life after the latter refused to offer a bribe of N100.

During the trial, the Prosecution, led by E.H. Edema, a Director in the Ministry of Justice, asserted that the defendant was part of a Police Patrol team conducting a stop and search operation.

The victim and his wife were traveling from Ugbolu to Asaba when they were flagged down by the police for inspection.

Tragically, the defendant allegedly opened fire on their vehicle, resulting in the death of Mr. Onyeka, who sustained fatal injuries to the head from bullets. Miraculously, his wife, seated beside him, escaped unharmed.

Justice C.D. Diai presided over the case, ultimately convicting and sentencing the defendant to death on Tuesday, June 12, 2024.
