Justice Olukayode Olumuyiwa Somolu, a retired Court of Appeal judge, has died.
He died on August 26th, at the age of 85. According to an Ogun State judiciary source, he died in Akure.
Otunba Kunle Bolujoko, National President, Ijebu Ode Grammar School, Old Boys Association (JOGSOBA), acknowledged his death on the platform of the school’s old boys. “The Hon. Mr Justice Olukayode Olumuyiwa Somolu, KJW, passes away at 85 years on this day, August 26, 2023,” wrote Otunba Bolujoko. May his soul rest in peace. Amen. “I just got the above news…,”
Justice Somolu joined the Ogun State Judiciary as a State High Court judge on January 1, 1979. Between June 2nd, 2000 through November 13th, 2001, he served as acting Chief Judge. Following his retirement from the Ogun State court, he was appointed as a Justice of the Court of Appeal until 2003, when he retired from the court due to reaching the obligatory retirement age of 65.
Justice Somolu served on the JOGS 53/57 Set and the JOGSOBA Board of Trustees until his death. On July 6, 1938, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, was born the late Justice Somolu.
He attended Central School in Onitsha from 1942 to 1945; Ago-Ijaiye Methodist School in Ebute-Metta from 1946 to 1952; Ijebu-Ode Grammar School from 1953 to 1957; City of West Minister College in London from 1958 to 1960; Holborn College of Laws in London from 1960 to 1962; and Grays Inn in London from 1961 to 1964.
He received GCE ‘O’ Levels in seven subjects, GCE ‘A’ Levels in three subjects, Bar finals, Inns of Court, and LL.B. Part 1 finals.
He was admitted to practice in Nigeria in January 1965 with Careen Practice Lawn Ademole Olatawura, – 1965-70; Olatawura & Shomolu, 1970-71; Somolu & Ajakaye, 1971-78.
He was a former legal adviser to the West African College of Surgeons, a constituent college of the West African Post Graduate Medical College, since 1973; the National Institute for Medical Research Nigeria, 1977; Total Nigeria Limited, 1971; the University of Ibadan, 1971-73; and Zabadine & Company, 1971.
