The 32nd Commandant of Nigeria’s top military school, the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, is Major-General John Ochai.
After 33 years of devoted service to the nation, Major General IM Yusuf transitioned into retirement and was succeeded by General Ochai.
This came after Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, recently deployed a number of top commanders to the Nigerian Army.
Maj Gen IM Yusuf, the outgoing Commandant of the nation’s premier military university, thanked God for his excellent career and productive term in his brief remarks during the handover ceremony at the NDA Headquarters in Kaduna.
He thanked the entire NDA community for their different forms of assistance during his leadership, and urged that the same collaboration be offered to his successor, whom he described as “a highly decorated officer and the right man for the job.”
The former commandant described his relationship with the new commandant as amicable, noting that they had served together in various roles, including 7 Division Maiduguri and the Department of Operations, Army Headquarters, Abuja.
Speaking at the event, the new commandant hailed his appointment as a privilege and stated that his primary obligation was to the cadets and staff development.
He characterized his predecessor as a remarkable man and a successful military leader, adding that it would be difficult to fill his predecessor’s shoes, but he has been prepared to manage the burden thanks to the outgoing commandant’s mentorship and training.
He also emphasized a willingness to learn, stating that every assignment was an opportunity for growth and development.
The commandant took advantage of the opportunity to congratulate General Yusuf on his successful retirement and thank him for his outstanding service to the Nigerian Armed Forces and the nation. He also wished the deceased commandant all the best in life.
The new commandant was a 39 Regular Course graduate and a highly decorated commander in the Nigerian Army Armoured Corps.
Among his earlier positions were Director of Operations at Army Headquarters and Commandant of the Nigerian Army Armoured School in Bauchi.
In his new post as Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy, he brings a plethora of experience and skills.
Among the highlights of the event are the signing of the handing and taking over notes, the decoration of the new Commandant with NDA insignia, the lowering and hoisting of the flag, and the inspection of the quarter guard.
