Prominent citizens and stakeholders from Kano State have called on the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to expedite the confirmation of Engr. Ramat Abdullahi as the Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
In a formal statement issued by Ahmed I . Suleiman Spokesperson Grassroots Initiative Concept, the group expressed deep concern over the delay in Abdullahi’s confirmation despite his nomination by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and the positive recommendation from the Senate Committee on Power, chaired by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe.
According to the statement, the delay in the confirmation—originally scheduled for October 22, 2025—was reportedly due to the actions of certain vested interests allegedly pushing false narratives and politically motivated petitions to frustrate the process.
The group described such acts as “a dangerous attempt to undermine merit, institutional integrity, and due process,” urging the Senate to uphold fairness and transparency in its legislative responsibilities.
“Engr. Ramat Abdullahi has served Nigeria and Kano State with integrity, competence, and dedication. His nomination reflects President Tinubu’s confidence in his capacity to lead NERC at a crucial moment in Nigeria’s energy reform journey,” the statement read.
The stakeholders emphasized that Abdullahi possesses the academic, professional, and managerial qualifications required to lead a strategic regulatory body like NERC. They described him as a patriotic Nigerian committed to the ideals of transparency and national development.
They also commended President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly its focus on power sector reform, and warned against the politicization of critical appointments that could derail the nation’s progress.
“It would be a disservice to Nigeria’s democracy and the Renewed Hope Agenda if capable hands like Engr. Abdullahi are sidelined due to political blackmail. The Senate must resist such pressure and stand for merit, equity, and justice,” the statement added.
The group expressed confidence that the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and other patriotic lawmakers would ensure due process and fairness prevail in the confirmation process.
They concluded by reaffirming their belief that Engr. Abdullahi’s leadership at NERC would accelerate Nigeria’s power sector reforms, improve service delivery, and strengthen investor confidence in the nation’s energy market.
