In a recent statement on his X account, former Labour Party chieftain Kenneth Okonkwo condemned the government of President Bola Tinubu for its handling of Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges. Okonkwo linked the tragic stampedes in Ibadan, Maitama, and Okija—resulting from desperate struggles for ₦5,000 and rice—to the hardship induced by the government’s policies.

He pointed out that these reforms have reduced the value of human life in Nigeria to a pitiful sum, further degrading the dignity of the people. Expressing his grief over the lives lost and the injured, Okonkwo stressed that Nigerians’ patience is running thin and that the country urgently needs a new generation of leaders with conscience and competence.

He called for the resignation of the current leaders, urging them to step aside for fresh leadership that can address Nigeria’s dire needs. Okonkwo concluded by praying for the victims and expressing his hope for a future reckoning, emphasizing that Nigeria’s people will demand change if necessary.
