North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently met with the nation’s Under-20 women’s football team, celebrating their remarkable victory at the World Cup in Colombia. The achievement, marked by a 1-0 win against Japan, is hailed as a significant source of national pride and unity, according to state media outlet KCNA.

With this latest triumph, North Korea has joined Germany and the United States as a three-time champion of the Under-20 World Cup, having previously secured titles in 2006 and 2016. Kim praised the players for their formidable performance, which included defeating renowned teams such as the United States, Brazil, and Austria.

During the reception at the Workers’ Party headquarters in Pyongyang, Kim emphasized the inspirational impact of the athletes’ achievements, stating, “Each and every valuable achievement that our athletes bring to international games has a unique appeal and inspiration, which further unites our people and powerfully pushes them forward on the path of energetic struggle.”

Recognizing Individual Contributions

Kim specifically acknowledged 17-year-old forward Choe Il Son, who scored the decisive goal in the final and secured the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer with six goals. He also praised head coach Ri Song Ho for their significant contributions to the team’s success.
