The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the creation of Kogi State University, Kabba, as the country’s 62nd state university and 265th university.
Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, Executive Secretary of the NUC, announced this in Abuja on Monday, when State Governor Yahaya Bello paid him a visit.
Rasheed stated that the commission received a letter on the formal presentation of gazetted paperwork establishing the institution on June 19.
“I write on behalf of the NUC to inform his excellency that Kogi State University, Kabba has been established as the 62nd state university and 265th university in Nigeria, effective June 26, 2023.”
“NUC pledges its support to the university and encourages you to fully utilize the institution.”
“By doing so, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) are being notified of the university’s establishment,” he explained.
Rasheed also informed reporters of his voluntary departure from the NUC in order to continue educating at Bayero University Kano, where he was assigned.
He stated that he had spent seven years as the commission’s executive secretary and needed to return to the classroom.
In response, Bello stated that the university would be recognized in the Kogi West Senatorial District for fairness, equity, and justice.
He stated that the university was founded to fulfill the state’s Okun people’s long-held ambition.
He stated that the state had established procedures to ensure that the university got off to a strong start, and that resources had been put aside for its launch.
“Education is our heritage in Kogi State, and it is something we are proud of, both within the state, across the country, and globally.”
“When I first arrived, we only had one university.” We rushed to the commission and founded Osara’s Confluence University of Science and Technology.
