Rabiu Kwankwaso, the former presidential candidate from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and former Governor of Kano State, has expressed his deep concern over the severe flooding in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State. Describing the situation as “horrifying,” Kwankwaso has called for urgent intervention from relevant authorities to assist those affected by the disaster.
In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, Kwankwaso extended his prayers and condolences to the Borno State government and the residents impacted by the flooding. He wrote, “I have seen horrifying images from Maiduguri, where many parts of the city are submerged by water. I appeal to the authorities and those who can help to render all necessary assistance to safeguard the people and their communities. Our thoughts and prayers are with the government and people of Borno State at this difficult time. – RMK”
The flooding in Maiduguri has been linked to the overflowing of the Alau Dam, leading to widespread displacement of residents. Many have been forced to leave their homes as various areas of the city have been heavily impacted. Social media has been flooded with videos showing residents evacuating their homes and seeking temporary shelter.
In response to the crisis, the Borno State government has ordered the closure of schools amid concerns that the flooding might worsen within the next 48 hours. Reports indicate that the situation, which began escalating a week ago, reached its peak early Tuesday morning.
