Due to a significant reduction in the amount of power supplied to the state by the federal government, the Kano Electricity Distribution Company, or KEDCO, has expressed fears that the state is currently without power.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, KEDCO’s Managing Director, Abubakar Yusuf, stated that Kano is not an exception to the problem of a scarcity of power supplies, which affects all of Nigeria.
He pointed out that Kano needs 600 megawatts per day to have a 24-hour power supply, but only gets 180 megawatts, which is insufficient, resulting in low shedding throughout the state.
“We have three franchise areas, Kano, Katsina and Jigawa, our main responsibility is to distribute what they receive from the government, and Nigerians should understand that within the value chain, there is where the power comes from”.
The Managing Director, also informed that KEDCO has apprehended six vandals of power equipment and is taking them to Court to face their charges.
He expressed worry that every day, vandalization takes place on KEDCO, the heinous act helps in plunging the state into darkness.
”Underpayment and energy thefts by customers also contribute to liquidity problems in the power sector.
“But let me say that the main problem is that there is inadequate power supply nationwide and a lack of gas availability
resulting in load shedding.
