The Lagos State House of Assembly has appointed four new principal officers following the impeachment of former Speaker, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, on Monday.
Presiding over plenary on Friday, the new Speaker, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda (APC-Apapa 1), disclosed the leadership changes, attributing them to the recent shift in the House’s hierarchy.
Obasa was removed from office by 32 out of the 40 lawmakers, citing gross misconduct. Additionally, the Clerk of the House, Mr. Lekan Onafeko, was suspended over allegations of gross financial impropriety.
In a sweeping move, the Assembly dissolved all standing committees previously constituted under the impeached Speaker.
Announcing the new appointments, Meranda revealed that Mr. Temitope Adewale (APC-Ifako-Ijaiye 1) is the new Majority Leader, while Mr. Adedamola Kasunmu (APC-Ikeja 1) will serve as the Deputy Majority Leader.
The new Chief Whip is Mr. Setonjo David (APC-Badagry 2), with Mr. Babatunde Saani (APC-Kosofe 2) taking on the role of Deputy Chief Whip.
“These changes are a reflection of the transition in the House’s leadership,” Meranda stated.
