The government-owned Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) and a commercial vehicle were involved in an accident that resulted in the death of one person and injuries to others, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
“A BRT bus and a commercial bus were involved in a collision at Ifako toward the Ogudu Bridge. LASTMA tweeted, “One Casualty on Ground, Others Injured.
The yellow commercial bus, affectionately known as “Danfo,” also looked to have somersaulted in a video clip posted on LASTMA’s Twitter account.
The BRT bus caught fire, aggravating the congestion along the axis.
While the LASTMA personnel were directing traffic, survivors were observed sitting on the sidewalk.
While its officers were overseeing proceedings at the accident scene, LASTMA said it had summoned the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and Lagos State Medical Emergencies (LASAMBUS) for assistance.
The incident halted traffic and created a snake-like bottleneck along the always congested corridor connecting the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Adebayo Taofiq, a spokesman for LASTMA, attributed the tragedy to the buses’ excessive speed.
“A BRT bus, two commercial buses, and the accident all involved buses. One of the commercial bus drivers passed very suddenly. There are some passengers with minor wounds, according to Taofiq.
Another step involved the formation on Tuesday of a collaborative task force between members of LASTMA and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command, with other qualified traffic managers to reduce accidents, notably truck crashes on Lagos Roads.
During a welcome visit by the new Sector Commander FRSC Lagos, Corps Commander Babatunde Farinloye, and his team to LASTMA Headquarters in Oshodi, Lagos, Bolaji Oreagba, the organization’s general manager, supported the proposed task force.
