Bystanders scooping diesel with buckets/jerry cans.

On the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) stopped a potential diesel fire explosion at Obadeyi before Ijaye on Thursday.

In a statement released on Thursday, October 19, Adebayo Taofiq, the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, revealed that the tanker, which was completely loaded with diesel goods, had fallen and spilled its contents over the motorway. He further stated that when LASTMA personnel arrived, they drove away scoopers from the scene.

“As soon as Lastma staff arrived on the site, they alerted the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, which includes the Lasema Response Unit (LRU), and they secured the area against local lads and other bystanders who had begun collecting diesel with buckets and jerry cans.

“According to preliminary investigations, the driver lost control of the falling tanker at Obadeyi after a brake failure. The tanker was fully loaded with diesel and was traveling from Abule-Egba to Ijaye.”
