The law firm Deji Adeyanju and Partners has withdrawn from representing Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya in his case against House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh, who allegedly assaulted him. Activist Deji Adeyanju announced the firm’s decision on X, citing “professional integrity” as a primary reason for stepping back from the case.

The altercation, which occurred on October 28, 2024, was captured on video and showed Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping Abuwatseya after he requested Ikwechegh come outside to receive a delivery. The video sparked public outrage, and Ikwechegh was later charged with abuse of office, assault, and threat to life. Released on ₦500,000 bail, Ikwechegh publicly apologized, expressing remorse for his actions.

In a statement, the law firm confirmed that their pro-bono involvement began following Abuwatseya’s distress call. However, “recent developments” prompted their withdrawal to “uphold the highest ethical standards.” The firm reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the rights of the oppressed.
