Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are in danger of relegation, embarrassed Jurgen Klopp’s struggling Liverpool on Saturday by defeating the underachieving Reds 3-0.
Wolves quickly made inroads into Liverpool’s porous defense, but they were unable to capitalize on their opportunities. In the fifth minute, a Hwang Hee-Chan cutback was deflected in by Joel Matip’s heel for an own goal.
Following some more shoddy defence by the visitors, Wolves rookie Craig Dawson slammed in the second goal from close range while going unnoticed.
a fervent Ruben Neves effectively finished the game in the 71st minute after controlling and poking the ball in at the end of a brilliant counterattack by the home team. Liverpool had began the second half well.
After a dismal start to 2023, in which it has only won one of seven games (against Wolves in the F.A. Cup), Liverpool is now 10th on 29 points.
Dreadful statistics
Klopp’s injury-riddled and self-doubting squad is a shell of the team that came dangerously close to a historic quadruple last season, when it won two domestic cups and finished second in both the Champions League and Premier League.
As a result, Liverpool lost three straight Premier League away games for the first time in ten years. It has allowed 28 goals in 21 games this season in the Premier League, which is more than it did all of last season.
The win allayed Wolves’ concerns about being demoted to the lower-tier Championship, moving the team up to 15th place with 20 points, two points above the bottom three, and leaving its jubilant fans singing along to every touch in the closing minutes as Liverpool players hung their heads.
The Molineux crowd sang to their Spanish manager Julen Lopetegui, “We love great Lopetegui.”
Meanwhile, Liverpool’s dejected-looking German manager Klopp had to put up with a taunt that was unfamiliar to him: “You’re getting fired in the morning.”
