Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are in discussions with Indian investors, including members of the Mittal family, over a minority investment that would value the Premier League champions at more than $6 billion, according to a report by the Financial Times.

Fenway Sports Group confirmed that negotiations are taking place after an investment group led by Amit Bhatia expressed interest in acquiring a strategic minority stake in Liverpool. In a statement, FSG said, “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”

Amit Bhatia, who is married to a daughter of steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, also stepped away on Tuesday from his long-standing ownership role at Queens Park Rangers, where he served as chairman between 2018 and 2023.

Liverpool has enjoyed a highly successful period under Fenway Sports Group, which bought the club in 2010 for 300 million pounds (around $400 million). Since then, the club has returned to the top of English and European football under the ownership of principal owner John Henry.

The Reds ended a 30-year wait for the English league title by winning the Premier League in 2020 before lifting another league crown last season. That success brought Liverpool level with Manchester United on 20 English league titles.

The club also won its sixth European Cup in 2019, the highest total by any English club, under former manager Jürgen Klopp. During his time at Anfield, Liverpool also reached two additional Champions League finals, finishing runners-up to Real Madrid in 2018 and 2022.

Do you think a new minority investment would help Liverpool remain competitive at the highest level of world football?
