The knee injury Lucas Hernandez sustained during the reigning champions’ 4-1 victory over Australia on Tuesday night has caused him to be ruled out of the FIFA World Cup 2022.
In the ninth minute of the game, immediately after Australia had scored, Hernandez hobbled off the field. His brother Theo Hernandez took his place.
On November 22, 2022, during France’s FIFA World Cup Group D match against Australia at the Al Janoub Stadium in Al Wakrah, Qatar, football players checked on Lucas Hernandez while the defender writhed in pain. Photographer: AP
Hasan Salihamidzic, the sports director at Bayern Munich, said, “The doctors of the French national team have informed us that Hernandez has damaged the cruciate ligament in his right knee. “Obviously, we are all stunned, and we apologize deeply. However, Lucas is a fighter and will bounce back powerfully.
Hernandez will return to Munich to complete his recovery, according to Bayern Munich.
“He will soon depart from Doha, travel to us, undergo surgery, then finish his rehabilitation in Munich. Salihamidzic continued, “He will get all the help he needs.
The latest setback to France’s title defense in Qatar 2022 is Lucas’ injury. After suffering a thigh injury last week, star forward and Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema was lost to coach Didier Deschamps even before the competition began.
Deschamps is also missing key players who helped France win the 2018 World Cup in Russia: Paul Pogba, Christopher Nkunku, N’Golo Kante, and Presnel Kimpembe.
