Luke Fleurs, a South African footballer, was fatally murdered by robbers in Johannesburg.
According to authorities, Luke Fleurs, a 24-year-old defender for Johannesburg’s famed Kaizer Chiefs squad, was shot and died Wednesday night while refueling his car at a gas station in the city’s northwestern suburbs.

According to police reports, Fleurs was at a gas station waiting to refuel his Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI when two armed guys in a white BMW approached him.

The suspects pointed him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once on the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car, followed by his accomplice,” said police spokesman Masondo Mavela.

He was transported to the hospital, but was pronounced dead when he arrived.

The authorities have initiated an investigation into the murder and car hijacking, and a hunt for the suspects is underway, with no arrests recorded thus far.

Kaizer Chiefs is one of South Africa’s most successful teams, having won 53 domestic championships, a record in the country’s football history.

His team wrote on social media, “It is with great sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs tragically died last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Sports Minister Zizi Kodwa took to social media to offer his condolences for Luke Fleurs, regretting another life lost to violent crime and sending his sympathy to Fleurs’ family, the Kaizer Chiefs squad, and the South African football community overall.
