Lucky Godwin was given the death penalty by hanging by the Ebonyi State High Court in Abakaliki for fatally stabbing a woman inside a hotel room there.

On September 30, Iheanchor Chima, the judge, handed out his decision.

After killing the deceased with a knife in 2018, the convicted man took the deceased’s infant and sold the two-year-old baby girl in River State.

He transported the dead and her child to Abakaliki’s Crown Garden Hotel from Enugu State.

He received the knife from Monday Onwe, the hotel gateman, who killed the woman.

After helping Mr. Godwin commit the crime, Mr. Onwe amassed N30,000 and fled from Abakaliki.

Days after the murder, the victim’s decomposing body was discovered.

Two years ago, Mr. Godwin tried to knife Chisom Ugwu, who was heavily pregnant, to death in a bush outside the Girls’ High School in Azuiyikowu, Abakaliki. Additionally, he took the woman’s 2-year-old baby.

Near the Crown Garden Hotel, where he had fatally stabbed the other woman, the woman was discovered unconscious in the nearby bush.

When the police arrived to rescue Ms. Ugwu and take her to the hospital, she was heavily bleeding from wounds to her neck, belly, and back.

Ijeoma Aja-Nwachukwu, the principal state attorney, praised the verdict.

“An Eye for an Eye, as the judge aptly stated. In accordance with the court’s ruling, he will be hanged as retribution for his actions. Since he took the life of that young woman, he must pay with his life.

“The accused person’s son, who he sold in River state’s Echie local government area, was also found, together with the child of the deceased and that of Chisom Ugwu.

The second defendant was released because, in accordance with the law, once there is a reasonable doubt, the defendant is presumed innocent.
