A Nigerian man has ignited online controversy after publicly denying his wife to share a moment with singer Tems during her performance at the Afro Punk Festival in Brazil over the weekend.
In a now-viral video, Tems paused mid-performance to acknowledge the man’s wife standing behind him, saying she didn’t want to “disrespect” her by serenading him. “I know your wife is here and I need to respect her,” Tems told the man.
But in a shocking twist, the man insisted he wasn’t married, prompting Tems to laugh. He then leaned forward and kissed her hand — an act that drew loud cheers from the audience and outrage from viewers online.
The viral moment has reignited debate over the boundaries between Afrobeats stars and their fans during performances. Many social media users slammed the man’s actions as disrespectful, while others defended it as harmless showbiz energy.
This isn’t the first time such onstage interactions have stirred controversy. In February 2024, Nigerian singer Omah Lay caused a social media storm after inviting a female fan — reportedly at his London concert with her boyfriend — to join him on stage while performing “Bend You.” Videos of the pair’s silhouettes triggered uproar, and reports later claimed the couple broke up after the show.
As reactions continue to pour in, Tems has yet to comment on the viral incident that’s keeping fans divided.
