On Wednesday, Manchester United released a statement about the accusations of domestic abuse made against their Brazilian forward Antony. The club, however, declined to comment until more details about the situation were made public.
Manchester United issued a statement saying that it “acknowledges the allegations made against Antony and notes that the Police are conducting investigations.”
“As a club, we are taking this matter seriously, with consideration of the impact that these allegations and subsequent reporting will have on survivors of abuse,” it continued.
His ex-girlfriend, who had reported him to police on May 20, accused Antony of domestic abuse. However, the Brazilian has refuted the allegations twice, most recently on August 4. However, as a result of the allegations, he was removed from the Brazilian team for two future World Cup qualifiers against Bolivia and Peru.
The day before he was kicked off the squad, the 23-year-old posted on Instagram, stating, “I vehemently deny the accusations.”
He said that despite their “tumultuous” relationship, he never physically harmed the woman. Every time she makes accusations in testimony or an interview, she presents a new version of them, according to Antony.
Brazilian football’s governing body stated that the incident “needs to be investigated” and that the player’s expulsion was necessary to protect him, the claimed victim, and the national team.
However, Manchester United has kept him on the roster. In their prior game against Arsenal, which the Red Devils lost 1-3, he started. With six points through four games with a match against Brighton and Hove Albion coming up, Erik Ten Hag’s team is still in 11th place. On September 21, they will play in the Champions League.
