Premier League giants Manchester United could spend a combined £37 million on the appointment and subsequent dismissal of Portuguese manager Ruben Amorim, according to a report by the BBC.

The 41-year-old was appointed from Sporting CP in November 2024 to replace Erik ten Hag, with United paying £11 million in compensation to the Portuguese club. The club also paid £10.4 million to Ten Hag following his dismissal.

Amorim’s stint at Old Trafford ended in January, with reports indicating that United paid a further £15.9 million as part of his exit package. During his 14-month tenure, Amorim recorded 24 wins, 18 draws, and 21 defeats in 63 matches, translating to a 38.1 per cent win rate.

Breakdown of Costs (Approximate):

  • Payment to Sporting CP: £11 million
  • Compensation to Erik ten Hag: £10.4 million
  • Compensation to Ruben Amorim: £15.9 million
  • Total: £37.3 million

Meanwhile, Manchester United announced on Wednesday that it returned to profitability in the second quarter as cost-cutting measures began yielding results. The club posted a net profit of £4.2 million for the quarter ended December 31, compared to a £27.7 million loss during the same period last year.

However, reduced sponsorship revenue and ticket sales — partly due to missing out on European competitions — limited overall earnings. The club maintained its annual revenue forecast of between £640 million and £660 million, with projected profits ranging from £180 million to £200 million.
