Man United Suffer Shock EFL Cup Exit Against Brighton

Manchester United surrendered a two-goal lead as Brighton and Hove Albion produced a remarkable comeback to eliminate Michael Carrick’s side from the EFL Cup 2026-27.

The defeat marked United’s second loss in two matches after the club fell to local rivals Manchester City in Sunday’s controversial Manchester derby.

It was also the first time in 50 years that United had lost a home match after taking a two-goal lead.

Carrick’s team started strongly and scored twice within the opening 10 minutes. Academy graduate Shea Lacey opened the scoring with a well-taken finish before Mason Mount reacted quickly to a rebound after Marcus Rashford’s effort had been blocked.

Brighton, however, fought back strongly after the interval. Charalampos Kostoulas reduced the deficit shortly before half-time, giving the visitors renewed hope.

Captain Pascal Gross then brought Brighton level after the hour mark with a composed strike from the edge of the penalty area.

The visitors completed the turnaround when substitute Maxim de Cuyper converted a cutback to put the Seagulls ahead and secure their place in the next round of the EFL Cup.

The result means Manchester United have suffered an early exit from the competition for the second consecutive season. United were eliminated by Grimsby Town at the same stage last year.

Brighton will now face the winner of Manchester City’s match against Norwich City, which takes place on Thursday.

The loss adds to a difficult spell for United, who have now suffered consecutive defeats.
